During the scientific and practical conference on April 1 at the Municipal Non-Profit Enterprise “Kyiv City Children’s Clinical Hospital No. 1”, we received an invitation from the team of Tetiana Mostepan to visit the Department of Health of the City of Kyiv to discuss ways to improve care for patients with primary immunodeficiencies.
We were able to clearly convey the key message: timely and high-quality diagnosis is critically important. For the patient, this means early access to treatment, prevention of complications, and preservation of quality of life and ability to work. At the same time, for the healthcare system, this means a significant reduction in burden, as one undiagnosed patient with an immunodeficiency may require resources comparable to hundreds of other patients with a normal immune system.
Congenital immune system disorders are rare, and cases of delayed diagnosis lasting several years, sometimes 20–30 years, are not uncommon.
We are grateful for the meaningful and constructive discussion. Our community remains ready to continue providing expertise to support the development of clinical immunology and improvement of patient care in the Kyiv community and beyond.
Particularly valuable was the participation of Martine Pergent, President of the International Patient Organisation for Primary Immunodeficiencies (IPOPI), who shared international experience and practical recommendations for the development of the system of care for patients with primary immunodeficiencies, and expressed her readiness for further consultation and cooperation.
